Kitchen Redesign
The owners who commissioned this project wanted, as a broad goal, to not only update the look of the kitchen but also to open it up to the adjacent living room/dining room. One of the owners is a French-trained chef, has recently published a book on cooking and maintains an active presence on social media. The ability to interact with guests while cooking was a key element in the redesign of the space. The existing kitchen space was completely closed off to the living room/dining room. As the wall was not load-bearing, we were able to remove it in its entirety. The kitchen space itself was completely gutted and rebuilt from the ground up with a new floor and new cabinetry. In order to maximize the size of the opening between kitchen and adjacent living room/dining room, instead of going with a traditional downdraft range hood, we purchased a ceiling-based range hood from Zephyr. This allowed for a maximum opening but also efficient exhausting of cooking odors from the room. We maximized countertop space by adding a small strip of countertop along one edge of the kitchen where a window was located. Additional space was also created with the fabrication of custom shelves inside a small, otherwise, lost corner of the kitchen.
